I've sat and listened for weeks as the league members have argued about the pros and cons of raising the dues. Here is what it costs me this past season to participate in th SEL. I made 11 trips to Tampa soley for SEL business. Since my back problems prevented me from sleeping on my sons couch, it was a minimum 2 night stay in a motel each visit.
I had to eat nearly every meal at a restaurant. Add in the cost of gas and the cost of hosting a meeting. Before I paid one cent to the league,
here is a breakdown of my expenses---
Motel $1320
Gas $550
Food $440
I'm sure there are more expenses that I'm not including, but I'm trying to make point. I want to make it clear that no one is forcing me to do this, but I stay in this league because I love it and I love the people in it. All this fighting over a modest dues increase has got to stop. Any extra money that's brought into the league will be used for the benefit of everyone and if we happen not to use all of it, it will be given back.
The prize payout this past season was exactly what it was 16 years ago in the first SEL season. 16 YEARS. It has never risen one penny. Every dues increase has been to pay for the added things that we want to do as a league. If you factor in inflation and the fact that I'm not driving us anymore, it just stands to reason that we need more
revenue. I respect the argument that we should take money from the existing money and in essence not let the winner take home such a large amount, but I have never heard anyone have a problem with it on the year THEY won. That includes me, first and foremost.
It would hypocritical of me to want future winners to not get exactly what I did.
The bottom line is this-- We can not run this league year after year after year on the same budget. The choices are simple, we can ignore the situation, put a band aid on it, or face the reality of the situation and do what's right for the long term stability of our beloved league.
Here is my promise-- If this creates a financial hardship for anyone of you, I am prepared to pay the extra cost for you. It's not about money anymore!
